Diocesan Priests Gather for Annual Retreat Focused on Spiritual Direction and Inner Healing
ANTIGUA, October 26, 2026 — Priests of the Diocese of St. John’s-Basseterre gathered at Verandah Resort and Spa in Antigua from October 19–23, 2026, for their annual retreat, a week of prayer, reflection and spiritual renewal in preparation for the pastoral year ahead.
Held under the theme “Spiritual Direction and Inner Healing,” the retreat was guided by the insights of Be Healed, authored by Bob Schuchts. It provided the priests with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the relationship between spiritual well-being, emotional health and the healing of personal wounds.
Throughout the week, participants reflected on the reality that every person experiences wounds in some form, whether spiritual, emotional or psychological, and that the journey towards healing is an important part of the Christian life.
The retreat also explored the distinctions between spiritual direction, counselling, psychotherapy and mentoring. These discussions highlighted the importance of recognising the different ways in which people can receive support and guidance, particularly in their efforts to grow in faith and develop a deeper relationship with God.
Recognising that the human person is composed of both body and soul, the retreat emphasised the significance of spiritual direction and healing in the life of faith. For the priests, this was not only an opportunity for personal renewal but also a means of strengthening their capacity to accompany others on their spiritual journeys.

The retreat provided a much-needed opportunity for the clergy to rest, reflect and refuel for the pastoral responsibilities ahead. It also reinforced the importance of personal spiritual growth in the ministry of those called to serve God’s people.
As the Diocese looks towards the pastoral year ahead, the hope is that the experience will leave its priests spiritually renewed and better equipped to support the faithful in developing a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God.
The Diocese gives thanks to God for the lives and ministry of its priests and prays that they will continue to be strengthened and renewed in their vocation, as they faithfully carry forward the mission entrusted to them.
Together for the Glory of God.
