On December 12, 2024, the Church celebrated the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe. It also marked an amazing experience for the Diocese of St. John’s-Basseterre and in particular, the Holy Family Cathedral Parish as Bishop Robert Llanos presided over the ordination of Mr. Zephenarius Norbert to the permanent diaconate. For Deacon Norbert, this occasion marked the culmination of many years of prayer, discernment and formation.

In his homily, Bishop Llanos reflected on the readings of the feast day but also took the opportunity to underscore the tremendous responsibility to which the deacon has been called. He entreated Mr. Norbert to do the will of God with all his heart, and “serve the people with love and joy as you would the Lord yourself”. He was also reminded that the primary sacrament in which he is called to holiness and sacrifice is his marriage and family.” At this moment, Bishop Llanos also encouraged Mrs. Norbert to embrace and support his ministry, and to allow their marriage to be a witness to the joys of family life in the Church.

In delivering his expressions of gratitude, the newly ordained reflected on his journey from childhood to the present, giving God thanks that despite many early challenges, he has been able to say yes to God. He also singled out his wife, children and extended family for their overwhelming support. The newly ordained has pledged to be a excellent witness to the love of God.

The newly ordained deacon will assist the bishop and his priests in ministries of the Word, Liturgy and Charity. This includes proclaiming the Gospel, leading intercessions, preaching, preparing the altar, celebrating baptisms, leading the faithful in prayer, distributing holy communion, witnessing marriages and conducting wake and funeral services. He is also mandated to assist in identifying the needs of poor and underserved, and shepherd the Church’s resources to meet those needs.
